Al Maani'

Manaʿa is to hold back, and manīʿ from the same root is a stronghold — a place nothing gets into. Both senses sit in this name: what is withheld, and what is defended, which turn out to be one action seen from either side of the wall.

The written form is not in the Qur’an; the list has kept it. The root is there, though, and in one pointed place: Sūrat al-Ḥashr describes people who were sure their fortresses would hold them — māniʿatuhum ḥuṣūnuhum — and did not. A door held shut is sometimes a wall doing its work, and sometimes it is only a wall.
