Al Mutakabbir

Kibr is greatness; in a person the same root gives takabbur, arrogance — greatness claimed rather than owned. The Qur’an uses that shape of the refusal in the story of Iblīs, who would not bow and istakbara. The form here is reflexive: greatness belonging to the one it is said of.

It closes the roll of names in Sūrat al-Ḥashr, and the ayah does not stop there — it goes straight on to declare Allah far above whatever people set beside Him. A word that condemns a man and describes God is doing two different jobs, and the whole difference between them is ownership.
