Al Khaafid

Khafḍ is lowering — and the same root gives the Qur’an’s phrase for lowering a wing, which is how Arabic pictures gentleness: lower to your ageing parents the wing of humility, out of mercy.

The written form of the name is not in the Qur’anic text; it belongs to the received list, paired there with ar-Rāfiʿ. The two participles do stand together once, though, and not of God but of the Day itself: khāfiḍatun rāfiʿa, bringing down and raising up, a whole ayah two words long. Being brought low is not the same as being pushed down.
