The Witness

Scroll on for a reflection, and where you’ll meet it

Reflection

To witness, in Arabic, is first of all to be present: shahida means both at once, and a shahāda is a statement made by somebody who was actually there. The language will not let testimony drift away from attendance.

The definite form is not written in the Qur’an, though the word without its article is common — fifteen ayat by the app’s own check, used of God, of Isa saying he watched over his people while he was among them, and of the messengers brought as witnesses over their communities. Nothing that happened to you happened with nobody there.
