Reflection
ʿIzza is strength of the unassailable kind, and the same root gives ʿazīz for something precious because it is hard to get at — the two senses lean on each other, as though what cannot be reached and what is worth reaching for were one idea. It is among the most frequent names in the Book, in 64 ayat, and it hardly ever stands alone: al-Ḥakīm follows it 29 times, ar-Raḥīm 13, al-ʿAlīm 6.
Nine of those fall in Sūrat ash-Shuʿarāʾ, eight of them the same closing line after one prophet’s story after another — might and mercy in one breath, repeated. Power in this Book is never described without something to govern it. Whatever feels strongest in your day is not thereby the last word on it.
