Reflection

ʿAfw is erasure: the wind ʿafā the traces of a camp until nothing showed where it had been. Forgiveness in this root is not a record kept and pardoned — it is a record gone.

Neither of the two ayat carrying this written form is the name. One is the plain noun in an answer about what to give away — the surplus, what is spare — and the other is an instruction: take what comes easily, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant. The same three letters do the erasing and the excusing, which may be one act described from two sides. There is a difference between being let off and being wiped clean.
