Al Muqsit

Qisṭ is fairness with a quantity attached — a portion weighed out, not a sentiment. The root runs twenty-five times through the Qur’an and does something strange on the way: in one shape, muqsiṭīn, it means those who are just, and in another, qāsiṭūn, those who are anything but.

The written form of the name is not in the Qur’an; the name is carried by the list. Fairness you can measure is harder than fairness you can feel, and it is the kind this root means. Where the letters could go either way, the shape decides — which is a fair description of most days.
