Nūr is light rather than the lamp — Arabic keeps sirāj and miṣbāḥ for the thing that burns. From the same root come nār, fire, and munīr, whatever gives light.

Ten of the twelve ayat carrying this written form also carry aẓ-ẓulumāt, the darknesses, and the sentence is nearly always the same: brought out of the darknesses into the light. Note where the plural sits — on the darkness, never on the light. The most famous ayah of light is not on this page at all, because there the word stands in construct, without the article the name carries. Light is the thing you see everything else by and almost never look at.
