Al Hakam

Ḥukm is judgement, and the root’s older sense is restraint — the ḥakama is the bit that stops a horse bolting, since a judgement is a thing held firm.

Every one of the eleven ayat on this page carries al-ḥukm, the judgement itself, rather than this name: three say plainly that judgement belongs to no one but Allah, three list it among what was given along with the Book and prophethood, and two close with the same line — to Him belongs the judgement, and to Him you return. The name is the judge, not the sentence. Not everything has been decided yet, and very little of it was yours to decide.
